Last of the airships? 1
At 7:20 PM on May 6, 1937, the world's largest airship, the Hindenburg,
floated majestically over Lakehurst Airport, New Jersey, after an
uneventful crossing from Frankfurt, Germany. There were 97 people on
board for the first Atlantic crossing of the season. There were a
number of reporters waiting to greet it. Suddenly radio listeners
heard the commentator screaming, "Oh, my God! It's broken into flames.
It's flashing... flashing. It's flashing terribly." Thirty-two
seconds later the airship had disintegrated and 35 people were dead.
The Age of the Airship was over.
6 Mayıs 1937'de akşam saat 7.20'de dünyanın en büyük hava gemisi
Hindenburg, Almanya, Frankfurt'tan sakince geçtikten sonra New
Jersey'deki Lakehurst Havaalanının üstünde görkemli bir şekilde
dolaşıyordu. Mevsimin Atlas'ı geçen ilk uçağında 97 kişi vardı. Onu
karşılamak için bir sürü muhabir vardı. Aniden radyo dinleyicileri
spikerin çığlık attığını duydular, "Aman Tanrım! Alev aldı.
Parlıyor... parlıyor. Korkunç bir şekilde parlıyor." Otuz iki saniye
sonra hava gemisi parçalandı ve 35 kişi öldü. Hava Gemisi Çağı sona
erdi.
