When computers were first used, one computer filled an entire room.

But then, in 1948, the transistor was invented by three Bell

Laboratories scientists, and the computer was transformed from a huge,

unreliable, heat-producing machine into a smaller, more dependable,

cooler one. New products were designed using this new technology.

But a problem developed: As the parts going into products became

smaller, wiring the together became an almost impossible job.

Computers of that time typically had more than 20,000 transistors

and thousands of other components.
